Former President Yameen has been transferred to house arrest tonight.
Maldives Correctional Service issued a statement saying that the ex-president has been transferred to house arrest under certain conditions.
President Yameen was detained at the request of the prosecutors in the initial hearing of the money laundering charges against him.
The Criminal Court requested the prosecutor’s request and ordered to detain him until the end of the trial. President Yameen’s lawyers appealed the detention order at the high court. The High Court concluded the hearings on the case but haven’t issued a verdict yet.
Many believe that the case against President Yameen is politically motivated and that the government wants to influence the upcoming parliamentary elections by detaining him.
