Former President of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has met President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih today.
The meeting was held at the President’s Office this morning. According to the President’s Office, the former President assured that he will continue to support President Solih’s administration.
President Maumoon is the head of Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) a member of the current ruling coalition. Even though the coalition partners agreed to work together in the parliamentary elections, upon winning the presidential election, ruling party MDP decided to contest for 86 out of the 87 seats in the parliament.
This led to a major disagreement between the coalition partners. MDP members are running against all candidates backed by former President Maumoon. Meanwhile, Jumhoory Party (JP) another partner of the coalition decided to work with opposition PPM/PNC coalition in the elections. The leader. Leader of JP and speaker of the parliament, Qasim Ibrahim criticized President Solih and MDP in a recent press conference held by his party.
Initially the coalition parties announced that the leaders of the party will hold a joint meeting with President Solih once a month. However, so far, they met only once.
Observers report that it is likely that all the coalition parties will join the opposition within the next few months.
