A notice to summon the Minister of Housing, Aminath Athifa, for questioning in Parliament has been issued. The summons comes with relation to problems pertaining to the Hiyaa housing scheme.
Mr Abdullah Rifau, an MP for South Macchangolhi, tweeted today that Minister Athifa was being summoned due to questions that have arisen with regard to reports about proposed alterations to the Hiyaa scheme.
Mr Rifau mentioned in his tweet that his questions will specifically be concerned about the statements of the Managing Director of the HDC. He had announced to the media that alterations were being made to the planned 2-bedroom apartments which had not yet been completed. It was claimed that the 2-bedroom flats that have been constructed were not “suitable for habitation”, and changes were necessary.
The Yameen administration had planned to construct 7,000 flats as part of the Hiyaa scheme, aimed at ameliorating the Maldivian housing crisis. 2,500 apartments have not yet been completed.
