A man who was under state’s care at the Home for People with Special Needs in K.Guraidhoo has died yesterday.
He was a down syndrome patient according to the officials.
The man died at Indhira Ghandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) while undergoing treatment. According to his family, there were signs of injury on his body. He was brought to IGMH on 24th of February after he suffered a stroke.
Prior to that, he was admitted at Guriadhoo Health Center twice. His family says that there were signs on his leg which shows that he was chained. Pictures of the chain marks on his leg have gone viral on social media.
The Gender Ministry of the Maldives claimed that he was chained by his family before he was brought to the center.
He is the fourth person to die in state custody since President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih assumed office. Even in Last January, a man under the custody of Gender Ministry passed away. Human Rights Commission of the Maldives announced that they are investigating the case but so far the public has not been updated about the case.
In addition, a young woman died while she was in police custody earlier this year. However, the woman was buried without performing an autopsy. Another man who was serving a jail sentence in Maafushi Jail also died. The man was buried without any further investigations as well.
Since President Solih assumed office, extraordinary deaths and deaths from accidents are on the rise.
