Former President Mr.Mohammed Nasheed has said that there are religious extremists within the ranks of Maldivian National Defence Force and Maldivian Police Force.
He made this statement in an interview with Channel News Asia. His interview was included in a documentary produced by the TV station.
The former president claimed that people with extreme views are in senior positions of the security forces.
“There are people within the security forces who belongs to Salaf (a religious NGO). There are extremists, people with radical views. They are in Customs; Immigration and they train here in the Maldives. Their training network is still there” said Nasheed.
He also claimed that Maldivians are still going to Syria. “They have played with the minds of gangsters. They use gangs in their defence” said Nasheed.
In addition, he said that people who train fighters for ISIS have agreements with Maldivian gangs.
So far Maldivian National Defence Force hasn’t commented on the statements made by the former president
