Maldives Police Service has sent a summons to Mr.Ahmed Nihan Hussein Manik the leader of People’s Progressive Party’s parliamentary group.
People’s Progressive Party and People’s National Congress are the only opposition parties in the Maldives.
Police Service sent the summons just hours after ruling party MDP issued a statement calling to investigate the gathering held at IGMH by supporters of PPM.
Supporters of former President Yameen gathered inside Indhira Ghandhi Memorial Hospital yesterday when they heard that the former president was being taken to the hospital. Maldives Police Service removed them from the premises after pepper spraying inside the hospital.
This was the first time Maldives Police Service ever used pepper spray inside a hospital.
It is widely believed that the government is targeting opposition politicians ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. Two weeks back, Maldives Police Service also arrested Mr.Mohammed Musthafa a council member of PPM. Mr.Nihan will be the fifth opposition politician to be summoned by the police since President Ibrahim Solih took office.
