Maldives Police Service has used pepper spray inside a hospital for the first time in the history of Maldives.
Police officers used pepper spray to disperse supporters of former President Yameen who were waiting inside the hospital. The former President was taken to the hospital earlier today by Maldives Correctional Service.
Members of the public including supporters of the current administration criticized the police for using pepper spray inside the hospital. Some even claimed that it was done on the orders of Home Minister Sheikh Imran who probably wanted to give the government a bad image.
Even though MDP advocates for a non-violent police force when in opposition, they always tend to use extreme force when in government. In 2010, during the administration of former President Nasheed, water cannons were used against protestors for the first time.
