Former President Mr.Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s lawyers have appealed the Criminal Court order for his detention until his money laundering trial is over.
His lawyer Abdullah Shiyaz tweeted saying that his legal team has lodged the appeal at the High Court of Maldives.
During a pre-trial hearing held on Monday, the Criminal Court ordered to detain the former President until his trial is over after the state attorney claimed that President Yameen will tamper with evidence and influence the witnesses.
Speaking in his defence at the hearing, President Yameen pointed out that the evidence against him are electronically generated bank statements and there is no way he can tamper with them. The judge however refused to consider his request.
President Yameen is detained at Maafushi Detention Center at the moment. He is being held in the special protection unit of the jail.
