President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih has suspended Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof due to immense public pressure after it was revealed that the minister received over 30,000 USD from SOF the company which is believed to have laundered the money embezzled through MMPRC.
An investigative report by the Anti-Corruption Commission lists the minister among the recipients of money through SOF. After the report was made public today, Mr.Mahloof claimed that he received the money in exchange for Maldivian Rufiyaa and that the transaction was legal. He also stated that since it happened years back he “forgot” about it.
However, the public found it hard to believe Maloof’s story. Many called for his resignation and as a reaction to the public outcry, President Solih suspended the minister until the matter was fully investigated. Even though some people praised the President for apparently giving “zero tolerance” to corruption, it should be noted that the report was made available to the president as soon as he assumed office, and yet he appointed Mahloof as the minister of Youth knowing that he received possibly embezzled money.
Many of the beneficiaries of the allegedly embezzled money include top financers of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
