Maldives Police Service has arrested Ahmed Musthafa Mohammed a council member of People’s Progressive Party (PPM). PPM is the largest party in the Maldives and currently the opposition party.
Mr.Musthafa was also the former Chief of Staff at the official residence of former President Yameen.
He was arrested at Velana International Airport around 1600 hours. According to sources, he was arrested with a court warrant.
Maldives Police Service announced that he is being suspected of threatening and influencing witnesses in a case against him for accepting bribes to lease an island allocated for tourism.
Mr.Musthafa is the first official from the former administration to be arrested by the current administration. Since President Solih assumed office in November 2018, Maldives Police Service has summoned officials of the former administration including former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
