Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has backed a candidate against his own son Mr.Ghassan Maumoon in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Mr.Ghassan Maumoon will be contesting for Th.Guraidhoo constituency with a ticket of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM). Meanwhile, former President Maumoon has publicly backed Mohammed Ibrahim Manik who is also running for the same seat. Mr.Mohammed Ibrahim Manik will be contesting as a member of MRM, a political movement led by former President Maumoon.
Mr.Ghassan Maumoon took former President Yameen’s side in the rift between his father and President Yameen. Even after his father, brother, and brother in law were jailed during former president Yameen’s administration, Ghassan chose to remain with President Yameen. Ghassan was a minister at the President’s Office in former President Yameen’s administration. He also contested for Guraidhoo constituency in 2009 parliamentary elections. He lost the election to MP Mohammed Musthafa (Thimarafushi) by 26 votes in that election.
