The Maldives Broadcasting Commission, the state media regulatory body, have decided to take action against Channel 13, the only opposition-aligned TV station in the Maldives.
A statement issued by the commission today states that the content broadcasted by the channel following the September 2018 presidential elections violated the broadcasting code of practice. The statement says that the channel repeatedly broadcasted content which accuses the President of the Elections Commission Mr.Ahmed Shareef of rigging the elections.
Maldives Broadcasting Commission is an independent authority which answers to the parliament. Members of the commission are nominated by the president and approved by the parliament. The current members were nominated by former President Yameen.
