An elderly man in state custody has died last night. The 85-year-old man died while he was undergoing treatment at IndhiraaGhandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives is currently investigating the matter.
According to Ministry of Gender, Family and Social services the man died of natural causes. The ministry tweeted saying that the man was undergoing treatment for cardiovascular diseases. The man was in state’s custody because the man had no legal guardian.
This is the second person to die in state custody within this month. Earlier this month a young woman who was in police custody died. According to Maldives Police Service the woman was treated humanly, and all her rights were ensured. The woman was buried without performing an autopsy. Human Rights Commission of the Maldives is investigating that case as well.
