Mr.Abdullah “Lolly” Jaabir, President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih’s trade envoy, has announced that he intends to contest for Kaahisdhoo constituency as an independent candidate.
Mr. Jaabir contested in Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s primary to win the party’s ticket for the seat. However he lost to Mr. Abdullah Riffath by a huge margin. According to an amendment brought to the political parties’ act, candidates who lose party primaries are barred from contesting in the elections as independent candidates.
However, Mr. Jaabir said that the amendment is unconstitutional and that he will file a case at the Supreme Court to revoke the amendment. Mr. Jaabir represented Kaashidhoo constituency in the 17th parliament.
Mr. Jaabir is also an advisor to former President Mohammed Nasheed.
