MP Abdul Latheef of the Jumhoory Party has proposed a constitutional amendment to bar former presidents from running for parliament.
Previously Latheef also submitted amendments to the electoral legislation to prevent former presidents from running for parliament.
According to Mr.Latheef he submitted the amendment because he does not want former presidents to run for the parliament because the state is obliged to spend on former presidents even now. In addition, he noted that the position of a parliament member is of a lower position than the president and hence he does not want to see former presidents in that position.
Meanwhile, former President Nasheed has announced that he intends to run for parliament in the upcoming elections and he already won MDP’s ticket to contest for Mahchangoalhi Medhu constituency. Former President Yameen has so far not made a decision about running for parliament but some speculate that he intends to run as well.
MDP stated that Mr.Latheef’s amendments were specifically targeted at former President Nasheed and threaten to dissolve the ruling coalition.
