Speaker of the parliament Mr.Qasim Ibrahim has vowed to get People’s National Congress party registered. PNC is a new party which former President Yameen is trying to register.
Speaking at a gathering held at the Jumhoory Party’s HQ, Mr.Qasim said that if it requires he will keep the parliament open for 24 hours to get PNC registered.
He also threatened to summon the members of the Elections Commission of the Maldives to the oversight committee on independent institutions.
Mr.Qasim said that it is his responsibility to get PNC registered because as the speaker of the parliament he should ensure that everyone gets treated equally.
Mr.Qasim Ibrahim and former President Yameen were political rivals in the past couple of years. Mr.Qasim was instrumental in President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih winning the last presidential elections. However, after the Maldivian Democratic Party violated an agreement made with Mr.Qasim to contest for the parliament as a coalition, he announced that he is open to talk with other political parties.
