Justices of the Criminal Court has decided to investigate prominent lawyer Mr. Husnul Suoodh over remarks he made about the Criminal Court justices a few weeks back.
Mr. Suoodh is the president of the special commission formed by President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih to investigate extraordinary deaths. Speaking at a press conference held by the commission Mr. Suoodh stated that the justices of the Criminal Court have close links with street gangs in Maale. Mr. Suoodh accused the justices of using gangs as personal security and also alleged that the gangs have a role in nominating justices for the court.
Judicial Service Commission of the Maldives formed a special committee to investigate whether what Mr.Suoodh said was true. Mr.Suoodh tweeted this week saying that he has provided the commission with evidence.
Senior members of the judiciary believe that Mr.Suoodh is in contempt of the court. Mr.Suoodh is known for making controversial statements from time to time. In 2018 he stated that the Maldivian National Defence Force should be disbanded. He also said that resort managers who do not give service charges to the employees should be jailed.
So far it is not clear whether Mr.Suoodh has any solid evidence to back up the allegations he made against the Criminal Court justices.
