The leader of the Jumhoory Pary (JP), Mr.Qasim Ibrahim have said that some of the politicians in the Maldives are trying to switch Maldives to a parliamentary system for their own benefit.
Speaking at a gathering held at JP’s HQ, Mr.Qasim said that a parliamentary system in Maldives will not benefit the people in any way. Mr.Qasim said that the people will be worse off with a parliamentary system.
In addition, he said that the people of Maldives do not want to give a majority to a group of people who would like to change the system like that.
Even though Mr.Qasim did not mention former President Mr.Mohammed Nasheed’s name, it was obvious that he was referring to Mr.Nasheed.
He further said that a parliamentary system will be highly unstable and that the president’s role in that system will be ceremonial.
Meanwhile, former President Mr.Mohammed Nasheed is a strong supporter of the parliamentary system. Speaking to the press in November 2018, he said that he would like to see a parliamentary system in the Maldives.
