Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has begun an awareness campaign prior to the parliamentary elections to be held in April 2019.
According to HRCM, the purpose of the campaign is to encourage people to vote and to discourage unethical practices such as selling votes.
HRCM is conducting the campaign through media. At the moment campaign materials are being shared on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. The commission also plans to circulate materials through mainstream media.
Some of the messages by HRCM advises voters not to “sell votes” and to become more responsible.
The parliamentary election will be held on 6th April 2018 and will be the most competitive parliamentary elections to be held in the history of Maldives. Prominent people who are running for the parliament includes former President Mohammed Nasheed, former Vice President Dr Mohammed Jameel, former Defence Minister Mohammed Nazim and former Fisheries Minister Dr Mohammed Shainee.
