The leader Jumhoory Party (JP) Mr Qasim Ibrahim have said that former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom should be allowed to make a new political party.
Speaking at a gathering held at JP’s HQ last night, Mr Ibrahim said that Mr Yameen Abdul Gayyoom should be treated in accordance with the laws and regulations. Mr Qasim also stated that he does not wish for Mr Yameen Abdul Gayyoom to be treated unjustly.
Mr Ibrahim, who is also the speaker of the People’s Majlis, had been sentenced to jail during the former President Yameen’s administration and was in a self-imposed exile in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Mr Ibrahim returned to the Maldives after Mr Yameen Abdul Gayyoom lost the presidential elections in September 2018.
Mr Ibrahim said that it is unacceptable that the authorities are trying to prevent Mr Yameen Abdul Gayyoom from forming a new party and noted that the constitution ensures rights to everyone and that everyone should be allowed to exercise those rights.
Former President Yameen is trying to form a new party named People’s National Congress. However, the Elections Commission of the Maldives is reluctant to register the new party.
