Transport Minister, Mrs Aishath Nahula, is set to visit the UAE to meet with the heads of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the financiers of the Maafaru International Airport in Noonu atoll.
The Transport Ministry said that Minister Manila will be leaving to Abu Dhabi on the 28th of December, and that the issue of the Maafaru will be a topic of discussion along with their cooperation and support to the Maldives in the transport sector.
While Minister Nahula is set to meet the ADFD, the Maafaru Airport development project has been placed on hold.
The Maafaru Airport development project, funded by ADFD and contracted to Singapore’s Top of the Show company, was signed on December 2017.
Close to the recent Presidential Election, test flights were conducted and the Maafaru Airport was officially opened.
The airport is designed with a runway that is 2,200 meters long and 40 meters wide to facilitate the A320 Airbus and Boeing 737 planes.
